Some eye problems require urgent evaluation by an ophthalmologist because delay in diagnosing these conditions can lead to permanent vision loss. The following are some of the warning signs that should prompt immediate consultation with an eye specialist.
Sudden Loss or Blurring of Vision
If your vision in one eye or both suddenly becomes blurry , it could indicate a serious eye or nerve problem. Some people may attribute this to problems with their spectacles but the change in spectacle power will not cause sudden blurring / decrease in vision.
Warning signs related to vision problems in children
Children often do not know they have a vision problem. Unlike adults they don’t complain especially when small. There are few signs noticeable by parents that could suggest their child might be having a vision related issue. If any of these signs are noted at either school or at home, the child needs evaluation by an Ophthalmologist as early treatment provides the best outcome.
Flashes of Light
Seeing flashes of light, like lightning streaks may indicate traction on the retina. It can be part of normal ageing change called posterior vitreous detachment but it could also be an early sign of serious problem like retinal Detachment. Retinal detachment is an emergency and needs immediate evaluation and treatment.
Sudden Appearance of Floaters
People may experience visual phenomenon like floating black dots, cobwebs, or moving shadows in front of their eyes. This may or may not be associated with flashes of light. These floaters move with the direction of gaze and often more noticeable in a particular head position or lighting condition. This may signal a tear in the retina, which is the nerve fibre layer responsible for vision or it could result from bleeding inside the eye.
Curtain or Shadow in Vision
If you notice a dark curtain or shadow covering part of your vision, it may indicate Retinal Detachment, which requires urgent treatment.
Severe Eye Pain
Severe onset of eye pain often associated with redness, blurred vision, headache may indicate increase in pressure within the eye called Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma. Many will experience nausea and vomiting because of increased pressure in the eye. Failure to initiate treatment immediately may lead to permanent loss of vision.
Eye Injury or Chemical Exposure
Any type of injury to the eye requires ophthalmologist’s consultation at the earliest. This may include fall of foreign bodies, blunt trauma, or chemical exposure etc. In case of fall of chemical substances, immediate wash with clean water is advisable as it may remove the toxic substance from the eye surface as much as possible. It is always advisable to wear protective glasses to avoid work place injuries.
Double Vision
Sudden double vision may be related to nerve problems or other neurological conditions and requires urgent evaluation. This may or may not be associated with blaring of vision.
Painful Red Eye with Light Sensitivity
A painful red eye with watering and sensitivity to light could indicate problems with cornea or it could be due to inflammation within the eye called Uveitis. Corneal infections can at times be serious and vision threatening. It is important to consult with an eye specialist for proper diagnosis and prompt treatment.
Important:
If you experience any of these symptoms, do not delay seeking medical care. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent permanent damage to your vision. Self treatment with over the counter eye drops to be avoided and can be very dangerous especially in the emergency conditions.
